For Love of Collage & Graffiti
Hello. This time around I have attempted something new with newly discovered materials. The images below reflect my passion for collage and graffiti (and music). --This is also the first time I've included text in my collage--. After my last post I had a lot of questions concerning my collages, and more specifically their meanings. I have provided an artist statement below that might provide some clarification:
Matt Sell constructs collages from found materials to reflect the overabundance of information and materials that define our modern world. Through the collection of forgotten or disregarded materials, he reformulates old ideas into new expressions. His primary sources of artistic materials are used magazines and abandoned papers. Collage artists Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Ray Johnson, and the contemporary Agnes Montgomery, have all used paper collage as a means of expression, and remain prodigious influences in his work. Matt Sell’s current collages are based on autonomous combinations of images that form ambiguous, political, and subversive imagery. He intends that his work should reach an avant-garde audience, one that seeks to further art rather than dabble in classical means of expression.
